Moral purpose of the highest order is having a system where all students learn, the gap between high and low performance becomes greatly reduced, and what people learn enables them to be successful citizens and workers in a morally based knowledge society.
-Fullan, 2003, p.29 (Lindsey, et al., 2009, p.123)
I do not believe there is an educator today that would disagree with the quote above from Michael Fullan. We desire a system where all students learn and the achievement gap is minimal if existent at all. Of course, teachers want their students to be successful citizens and morally responsible workers. Unfortunately, the system which we work in can make it difficult for this to be achieved in every school. There are a wide range of reasons I believe this is true, but the one that educators have direct control over is the one that begin with ourselves. We cannot control the homes our students live in, making policy and political changes takes time and strong organizations, but we CAN control our view of our students, their families, and the communities we work in. Cultural change needs to begin within, when enough people make this change, then citizens can organize and work to make changes on larger scales. I strive to be an educator who is true to her word and who walks the talk. This is within my control. By doing this I can also support my team members to also ensure that their actions align with their values.
Below is the table I created after reading pages 128-131.
